The Oyo State Police Command has announced the appointment of CP Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga as its 49th Commissioner of Police, marking a new phase in the state’s security leadership.

The new CP takes over the leadership of the state Police command from his predecessor, Femi Haruna.

In a statement on Friday by the Police Public Relation Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, the Command confirmed that CP Olugbenga has officially taken over from Olufemi Haruna, who served as the 48th Commissioner of Police since April 2025.

A career police officer with over three decades of experience, Olugbenga is widely regarded within the force as a steady hand, shaped by years of operational, investigative and administrative assignments across the country.

He holds a degree in Sociology from Ahmadu Bello University, and has attended several high-level professional courses, including leadership and command trainings at the Police Staff College in Jos and the National Institute of Police Studies in Abuja.

Since joining the Nigeria Police Force in June 1994 as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police, Olugbenga has served in a wide range of capacities across Lagos, Delta, Borno, Kano, Yobe, Oyo and other states.

His experience spans grassroots policing as a Divisional Police Officer to high-level national assignments.

Notably, he served as Police Component Commander under Operation Lafiya Dole in Borno State, a role that placed him at the heart of counter-insurgency operations.

He also held key positions at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, including Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Safer Highway and later Commissioner of Police overseeing the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit.

Colleagues describe him as a methodical officer with a reputation for proactive policing and crisis management, particularly in volatile environments.

His record includes commendations for bravery, professionalism and effective coordination with other security agencies.

Beyond the uniform, Olugbenga is said to have a reflective side, with interests in writing, reading, counselling and even dancing, a detail that offers a glimpse into the man behind the rank.

The Command expressed confidence that his leadership would strengthen security architecture in Oyo State, deepen public trust and sustain ongoing efforts at strategic and community-based policing.
