As the political conversation around the 2027 governorship election in Oyo State gradually gathers momentum, one question continues to echo across the corridors of power, political meetings, and grassroots discussions: If power must shift across zones, why not give serious consideration to Otunba Segun Ogunwuyi?

Politics in Oyo State has always revolved around competence, credibility, and regional balance. As the tenure of Governor Seyi Makinde approaches its constitutional end in 2027, conversations about succession are no longer speculative—they are inevitable.

While many names have surfaced, the debate must rise above sentiments and focus on leadership capacity, administrative experience, loyalty to governance ideals, and the ability to sustain the progress already recorded in the state.

In that conversation, Otunba Segun Ogunwuyi stands as one of the most qualified and strategic options for the future of Oyo State.

A Tested Administrator at the Heart of Governance

Currently serving as the Chief of Staff to the Governor of Oyo State, Segun Ogunwuyi occupies one of the most powerful and demanding administrative positions in the state government. In this role, he has been deeply involved in coordinating government activities, shaping policy direction, and ensuring the smooth execution of the administration’s developmental agenda.

Before assuming this role, Ogunwuyi served as Executive Assistant to the Governor on Investment and later as Director-General of the Oyo State Investment and Public-Private Partnership Agency (OYSIPPPA), where he played a key role in investment initiatives that supported the execution of major infrastructure projects through alternative funding approaches.

These experiences have placed him at the nerve centre of governance, giving him a rare understanding of the machinery of government—an advantage that cannot be underestimated in leadership succession.

From the Legislature to Strategic Governance

Otunba Ogunwuyi’s political journey reflects a steady progression built on experience and service.

He previously served in the Oyo State House of Assembly and later represented the Ogbomoso North/South and Oriire Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.

This dual legislative exposure—both at state and federal levels—has equipped him with a deep understanding of policymaking, governance processes, and political negotiation.

Unlike many aspirants who approach governance from theory, Ogunwuyi’s political career has been built on practical engagement with governance institutions.

A Technocrat with Private Sector Depth

Beyond politics, Ogunwuyi brings something increasingly important in modern governance: professional competence.

An alumnus of Obafemi Awolowo University with degrees in Accounting and Business Administration, he is a certified accountant and financial consultant.

His background in finance, administration, and corporate management offers a blend of technocratic discipline and political experience—qualities needed for a state navigating economic growth, infrastructure development, and youth empowerment.

In a time when governance must balance political leadership with economic expertise, this combination is invaluable.

The Ogbomoso Factor and the Question of Equity

One of the most sensitive but unavoidable discussions in Oyo politics is regional balance.

The state is politically diverse, with influential zones such as Ibadan, Ogbomoso, Oke-Ogun, Oyo, and Ibarapa. For years, power has largely revolved around certain zones, while others continue to seek broader representation.

If political leaders and stakeholders truly believe that leadership should rotate or that other zones deserve the opportunity to lead, then the Ogbomoso axis presents a strong case.

And within that axis, Otunba Segun Ogunwuyi is arguably the most strategically positioned political figure.

His political influence in the region, combined with his proximity to the current administration, makes him a bridge between continuity and regional inclusiveness.

Loyalty, Stability, and Continuity of Vision

Leadership transition is not merely about replacing a governor—it is about preserving the momentum of governance.

Ogunwuyi has been one of the closest political allies and administrative strategists of Governor Seyi Makinde. His role within the administration has positioned him as one of the individuals most familiar with the government’s long-term vision and development strategies.

This proximity to governance ensures that policy continuity would not be disrupted, especially in areas such as infrastructure, investment attraction, and economic reform.

For many political observers, this continuity is critical for sustaining the progress recorded in Oyo State over the past years.

Leadership Beyond Noise

One of Ogunwuyi’s defining characteristics is his political style.

Unlike many politicians who thrive on loud rhetoric, Ogunwuyi has built his influence through quiet coordination, strategic mobilization, and institutional leadership. Political insiders often describe him as a tactician who works behind the scenes to keep governance machinery running effectively.

In a political era dominated by noise and propaganda, such a leadership style reflects discipline and focus.

The Question Before Oyo

As the countdown to 2027 gradually begins, the central question for political stakeholders and citizens of Oyo State is simple:

If leadership must shift beyond traditional zones…
If competence must guide succession…
If governance continuity must be preserved…

Then why not Otunba Segun Ogunwuyi?

The future of Oyo State will ultimately be determined by the collective decision of its people and political actors. But in the unfolding debate about succession, fairness, competence, and strategic leadership, Ogunwuyi’s name deserves not only mention—but serious consideration.

Because sometimes, the most capable leader is not the loudest voice in the room.

Sometimes, it is the one who has been quietly building the system that keeps the room standing.
