The lawmaker representing Ibadan North Federal Constituency, Hon. Folajimi Oyekunle (DON), has raised concerns over what he described as the consistent sidelining of minority lawmakers in the National Assembly, particularly in critical decisions such as loan approvals.

Oyekunle made this known during a live interview hosted by Ambassador Abiodun Abolade Salami on Almond FM 94.3, while featuring on the popular political programme, Gbagede Oṣèlú.

Speaking on legislative responsibilities, the federal lawmaker emphasized that effective representation requires dedication, courage, and a firm commitment to defending the interests of constituents. He noted that since his resumption at the Green Chamber, he has remained proactive in laying the groundwork for impactful representation.

Addressing the pace of development projects, Oyekunle explained that the delay in the full implementation of the 2024 budget has significantly affected the execution of constituency projects. According to him, many planned interventions are tied to budgetary releases that are yet to materialize.

Despite these challenges, the lawmaker highlighted several interventions already carried out, including the distribution of food palliatives aimed at cushioning the economic hardship faced by residents of Ibadan North.

He added that the initiative brought relief and immediate support to many households.
In a move to deepen grassroots engagement, Oyekunle disclosed that he appointed over 50 Special Assistants, strategically selected across different communities and beyond political affiliations. He said the appointments were designed to ensure inclusivity and bring governance closer to the people.

On healthcare, the lawmaker revealed that efforts are underway to provide health insurance coverage for vulnerable constituents, noting that the initiative is targeted at reducing the financial burden of medical care for beneficiaries.

However, he expressed dissatisfaction with the process surrounding recent loan approvals at the National Assembly. “I read about the approval online. The minority was never carried along. The majority had their way, and that explains why such approvals scale through easily,” he said.

Oyekunle also outlined key projects currently in the pipeline for his constituency. These include the installation of street lights, solar-powered boreholes, and the construction of a bridge linking three communities in Ayope Compound, all aimed at improving infrastructure and quality of life.

Reacting to the ongoing crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the lawmaker maintained that political parties are ultimately shaped by the people. He stressed that loyalty remains with the leadership direction, adding that should the party cease to serve as a viable platform, he and his supporters would align with the decision of the state’s leader, Governor Seyi Makinde.

Oyekunle reaffirmed his commitment to delivering dividends of democracy to the people of Ibadan North, while calling for greater inclusiveness and transparency in legislative processes at the national level.
