Manchester United booked their place in next season’s UEFA Champions League with a dramatic 3–2 victory over Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday, as Kobbie Mainoo delivered the decisive late goal.

United made a blistering start, asserting dominance early and racing into a two-goal lead within the opening 15 minutes. Matheus Cunha broke the deadlock with a strike from the edge of the box that deflected off Alexis Mac Allister, leaving goalkeeper Freddie Woodman helpless.

Moments later, Benjamin Sesko doubled the advantage, finishing from close range after a dangerous delivery from Bruno Fernandes caused chaos in the Liverpool penalty area.

Despite United’s early control, Liverpool gradually found their rhythm and showed glimpses of danger before the break, with Cody Gakpo going close.

The visitors returned stronger after halftime and quickly turned the game around. Dominik Szoboszlai pulled one back after capitalising on a loose pass, surging forward before calmly slotting into the bottom corner. He then played a key role in the equaliser, setting up Gakpo for a straightforward finish after another midfield lapse from United.

With the match finely balanced at 2–2, both sides pushed for a winner. Liverpool appeared more composed during that phase, but United rallied late on to regain control.

The decisive moment arrived when a loose clearance fell kindly to Mainoo on the edge of the box, and the youngster showed composure beyond his years to fire home the winner.

The victory lifts Manchester United six points clear of Liverpool and secures a top-five finish, confirming their return to Europe’s elite competition after a two-year absence.

Liverpool, meanwhile, remain in contention for qualification with crucial fixtures still to play.

The result also underlines the impressive run of form under manager Michael Carrick, whose side has now claimed notable victories against several top opponents.
