The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has issued a strong warning to Nigerians over a fraudulent link and flyer circulating online, falsely claiming to offer free correction of National Identification Number (NIN) details.

In a statement released via its official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Saturday, the commission cautioned the public against engaging with the misleading content, stressing that the advertised “free” NIN data correction portal is not legitimate.

According to NIMC, the link embedded in the viral flyer is unauthorized and should not be used under any circumstances for updating personal information.

“The public is hereby advised not to use the above for modifying their NIN data. All modifications should only be done via the official channel,” the commission stated.

The deceptive flyer, which has been widely shared across social media platforms, bears the logos of NIMC and the Federal Government, giving it a false sense of authenticity. It also claims the portal was introduced in response to a “high level of complain,” while directing unsuspecting users to an unofficial website.

The flyer outlines several supposed data correction services, including changes to name, gender, and date of birth—services that NIMC insists can only be accessed through its approved self-service platform.

NIMC further revealed that the flyer has been clearly marked “FAKE” and is being reshared as part of efforts to alert the public to the scam.

Reaffirming its position, the commission urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and ensure that all NIN-related updates are carried out strictly through its official channels to avoid falling victim to online fraud.
