Fresh efforts to reunite the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are gaining momentum, with key party elders including Bukola Saraki, Ahmed Makarfi and Jerry Gana spearheading high-level consultations aimed at healing divisions within the party.

The reconciliation moves come ahead of the party’s crucial national convention scheduled for March 29–30 in Abuja, as stakeholders work to build consensus between rival factions.

Court ruling reshapes PDP leadership structure

The renewed dialogue follows a recent Court of Appeal judgment that nullified the November 2025 convention held in Ibadan, which had produced a national leadership led by Tanimu Turaki.

The ruling effectively restored control of the party to a caretaker structure aligned with Nyesom Wike, under the leadership of Alhaji Abdulrahman Muhammad.

In response, both factions have opened communication channels, initiating exploratory talks and setting up a National Convention Committee chaired by former Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, a known ally of Wike.

Ikpeazu: “This is a moment of truth for PDP”

At the inauguration of the committee in Abuja, Ikpeazu described the reconciliation process as non-negotiable, stressing that it must be driven by sincerity and mutual respect.

According to him, the upcoming convention represents a defining moment for the PDP to overcome internal crises and reposition itself as a strong national opposition.

He acknowledged the party’s recent struggles, including prolonged legal battles and internal disagreements, but noted that the court’s decision offers a fresh opportunity to rebuild trust and strengthen internal democracy.

“This is more than a convention; it is a test of our unity and resolve. History has given us another chance—we must not waste it,” he said.

Signs of unity as committees reflect inclusiveness

Party insiders say the reconciliation process is yielding positive signals, with both factions being represented across committees set up for the convention.

Notably, former National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba and other prominent figures from different camps have been included, reflecting a deliberate effort to foster inclusiveness and restore confidence.

The PDP has also commenced a fresh digital membership registration exercise to replace the earlier process initiated by the Turaki-led group.

Convention plans on course despite ongoing talks

The party leadership has reassured members that reconciliation efforts will not delay the convention.

According to the caretaker committee’s spokesman, INEC has already been duly notified and has monitored congresses at various levels, in line with legal requirements.

Meanwhile, a zoning committee is expected to submit its report to an emergency National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja, where key decisions on party structure and the 2027 presidential ticket may be finalised.

Turaki expresses optimism, urges unity

Speaking after Eid-el-Fitr prayers, Tanimu Turaki expressed optimism about the ongoing reconciliation, urging party members to embrace peace and remain committed to democratic values.

He emphasized the need for vigilance and active citizen participation as Nigeria approaches another critical electoral cycle.

Lamido open to meeting Tinubu

In a related development, PDP chieftain and former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido said he is open to meeting President Bola Tinubu if such engagement would advance national unity and development.

Lamido dismissed claims that he had been invited to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), describing such reports as unfounded.

“If it is about Nigeria’s progress, I am willing to meet the President,” he said, adding that national interest must always take precedence over partisan politics.

Overall, there are growing indications that the PDP may be on the path to internal reconciliation, as party leaders intensify efforts to close ranks and present a united front ahead of the 2027 general elections.
