The All Progressives Congress (APC) has confirmed plans to adopt a consensus approach in selecting its national leadership at the party’s convention scheduled for March 27–28, 2026, in Abuja.

This was disclosed by Mary Ikoku, Assistant Secretary for Media and Publicity of the APC National Convention 2026, during an appearance on Sunrise Daily, a programme on Channels Television.

Ikoku explained that while consensus would be used for the national leadership positions at the convention, the mode of selecting candidates for elective offices during primaries remains undecided. According to her, such decisions are often influenced by local political realities.

She noted that Nigeria’s Electoral Act provides clear guidelines on acceptable methods of candidate selection, including direct primaries and consensus, while indirect primaries have been removed.

Ikoku further emphasized that political parties are expected to be proactive and well-prepared, warning that failure to plan ahead could create significant challenges, especially during critical electoral processes.

Meanwhile, the party has commenced the screening of aspirants for key positions within its National Working Committee (NWC). Notable figures in the race include National Chairman aspirant Nentawe Yilwatda and National Secretary hopeful Ajibola Basiru.

Also seeking to retain their positions are National Youth Leader Dayo Israel, Deputy National Chairman (North) Ali Bukar Dalori, National Legal Adviser Abdulkarim Abubakar Kana, National Woman Leader Mary Alile Idele, and National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka, among others.

The convention is expected to shape the party’s leadership structure ahead of future electoral engagements.
