Nigeria’s political capital is buzzing as top leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) gather in Abuja for the party’s much-anticipated national convention holding Friday and Saturday.
Leading the high-profile event is President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, alongside members of his cabinet, 32 state governors, and over 8,400 delegates drawn from across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
The convention, which will usher in a new set of party leaders, is also expected to attract key stakeholders from all levels of the party — national, zonal, state, and ward.
Speaking ahead of the event at a media briefing in Abuja, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, described the gathering as a defining moment for the ruling party. According to him, the theme, “Unity in Progress: Consolidating the Renewed Hope Agenda,” reflects both the party’s journey so far and its vision for the future.
He explained that beyond electing new executives, the convention will serve as a platform for reflection, policy discussions, and setting the direction for the party’s next phase — especially as preparations for the 2027 general elections gradually take shape.
Idris also assured Nigerians that all arrangements have been concluded to ensure a smooth, transparent, and hitch-free exercise at Eagle Square, the venue of the convention.
On his part, the Chairman of the Convention’s Central Coordinating Committee, Aminu Masari, reaffirmed the party’s commitment to its zoning arrangement, stressing that it remains key to fairness and internal balance.
While the party expressed confidence in a seamless process, there have been pockets of discontent. Some members alleged exclusion from contests, including a chieftain, Fubara Dagogo, who raised concerns over his omission from the South-South Zonal Congress. However, he noted that he would pursue resolution through internal party mechanisms rather than legal action.
Meanwhile, the Federal Government directed civil servants within the Federal Secretariat in Abuja to work from home due to road closures and heavy movement around Eagle Square.
Across the city, hotels and guesthouses are fully booked as delegates and party supporters flood the capital, underlining the scale and significance of the convention.
With thousands of stakeholders in attendance and major decisions expected, the APC convention is set to shape the party’s internal structure and political direction ahead of the next electoral cycle.
