Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has opened a window into one of the most anticipated political decisions in the state—revealing that he will announce his preferred successor for the 2027 governorship race before the end of the first week of May.

Speaking through a newsletter released on Saturday, the governor painted a picture of deep reflection and responsibility, emphasizing that the choice ahead is not just political, but one that will shape the future of Oyo State for years to come.

Makinde explained that he has been engaging in wide-ranging consultations, sitting with respected elders, religious leaders, and other critical stakeholders to ensure that whoever emerges carries the collective trust and vision of the people.

“We are approaching that point of decision,” he said. “This is not something to rush. I understand the weight of this responsibility, and I am committed to making the right choice for our people.”

Despite growing speculation across the state, the governor was clear—he has not secretly endorsed any aspirant. Instead, he noted that the ongoing consultations have naturally brought forward a number of strong contenders, each with their own track record and support base.

Within the Peoples Democratic Party, insiders reveal that a screening process has quietly been underway since late March, engaging aspirants considered capable of sustaining the administration’s developmental strides. Among those frequently mentioned in political discussions are Nureni Adeniran, Segun Ogunwuyi, Taofeek Arapaja, Adebo Ogundoyin, and Adedeji Stanley Olajide.

However, beyond personalities and politics, Makinde hinted that a crucial legal factor will also shape his next move. He disclosed that the final decision on the political platform for the 2027 election hinges on an awaited ruling by the Supreme Court of Nigeria concerning the PDP.

“There have been questions about the platform we will use,” he noted. “We will wait for the Supreme Court’s decision. Once that is settled, we will clearly communicate our direction.”

The governor’s remarks come at a time when the political atmosphere in Oyo State is charged with speculation and behind-the-scenes maneuvering. Recently, rumours circulated alleging a meeting between former First Lady, Florence Ajimobi, and Speaker Adebo Ogundoyin over an alleged plot against the governor—claims both parties swiftly dismissed.

Ogundoyin himself later shared that he had been approached with financial inducement tied to the alleged scheme, which he rejected, reaffirming his loyalty to Makinde and the people of Oyo State.

In another wave of political tension, former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, accused Makinde of plotting against the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja. Both the governor and the revered monarch dismissed the allegation, describing it as unfounded and politically driven.

As Oyo inches closer to a defining political moment, Makinde’s calm but deliberate approach signals a leader intent on balancing legacy, loyalty, and the long-term interest of the state—before making what could be his most consequential political decision yet.
