The Association of Igbo Residents across Oyo State has strongly reaffirmed its support for Seyi Makinde, while condemning what it described as external political interference and alleged plots to destabilise the state.

Addressing journalists on Saturday, leaders of the Igbo community drawn from all geopolitical zones of Oyo State, alongside supporters of the current administration, expressed deep concern over recent political developments they believe could threaten the peace and steady progress recorded in the state.

Speaking on behalf of the group, community representatives said they were particularly disturbed by comments and actions allegedly linked to former Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose. They accused him of attempting to import political tensions into Oyo State and distract the current administration from its development agenda.

According to the group, it was “unfortunate” that individuals without constitutional roles in the state would seek to interfere in its internal affairs. They further alleged that Fayose was working in alignment with Nyesom Wike and others to stir controversy, particularly around the revered Olubadan Stool.

Describing the Olubadan institution as sacred and central to the identity of Ibadanland, the group warned against dragging traditional structures into partisan politics or using them to settle political scores.

“We will not fold our arms and watch anyone manipulate our peaceful environment for selfish ambition,” a spokesperson said, urging political actors to focus on issues that promote unity and development.

The group also took exception to remarks reportedly made by Fayose, including comments questioning Governor Makinde’s leadership and succession plans. They insisted that the process of selecting candidates remains clearly defined by Nigeria’s electoral laws and should not be subjected to external pressure or misrepresentation.

On the issue of a purported impeachment plot against the governor, the association dismissed it as a “baseless distraction” aimed at undermining a performing administration. They maintained that Makinde has earned the trust of the people through visible infrastructure projects, improved healthcare delivery, agricultural initiatives, and policies that promote economic growth and worker welfare.

Members of the Igbo community, who described themselves as one of the largest non-indigenous groups in the state, highlighted the inclusive nature of the current administration. They noted that under Governor Makinde, they have enjoyed peaceful coexistence, business growth, and access to opportunities, describing Oyo State as a “home away from home.”

“Our businesses are thriving, our people feel safe, and we have always received a listening ear from this government. Supporting such leadership is not just loyalty, it is gratitude,” one community leader stated.

The association also cautioned against inflammatory political rhetoric, warning that such actions could deepen divisions and distract from governance. They called on leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to rein in members whose statements could harm party unity ahead of future political engagements.

In a broader appeal, the group urged residents of Oyo State to remain calm, vigilant, and focused on development, rather than being swayed by what they described as propaganda or politically motivated narratives.

They further advised political actors from outside the state to concentrate on resolving issues within their own constituencies instead of interfering in Oyo’s affairs.

Reiterating their stance, the Igbo leaders unanimously rejected any attempt to destabilise the state or undermine its leadership, stressing that Oyo remains a model of peace, ethnic harmony, and progressive governance.

Notable members of the community who aligned with the position include John Idoko (Enugu State), Ogochukwu Ogbonna (Ebonyi State), Barrister Ndo Ofurenna (Imo State), Ukachi Clement (Imo/Oyo), Valentine Chukwu (Anambra State), and Kingsley Ike (Abia State).

The association concluded by pledging continued support for Governor Makinde and his administration, emphasizing their commitment to peace, unity, and the sustained progress of Oyo State.
