Barring any last-minute change in plan, the Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, may resign his position to pursue his governorship ambition in Oyo State.

Sources close to the Presidency and the minister confirmed to The PUNCH that Adelabu would resign from his position either today or before the end of the week.

Though his resignation is coming after the March 31 deadline given to political appointees of the Federal Government to resign, Adelabu met President Tinubu on Tuesday to inform him of his political ambition in Oyo State.

The PUNCH sighted the minister at the Villa, though he did not speak with journalists after the meeting.

A close ally of the minister said, “He will resign, but I don’t know if it is Wednesday or later in the week. But definitely he’s going to resign.”

He added, “He has seen the President, and he has told him about his ambition. He had got the blessings of the President. He also briefed the President about his activities in the past two and a half years.”

After meeting the President, The PUNCH gathered that he met with the former governor of Osun State and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Chief Adebisi Akande, and a former Chairman of the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Ltd, Chief Pius Akinyelure.

Adelabu, who ran the governorship campaign of the party in 2019 and on the platform of Accord in 2023, has not hidden his interest in contesting the 2027 election on the platform of the APC.

The APC, on Monday, set May 23, 2026, for its governorship primaries, pegging the fee at N50m for prospective aspirants.

The sale of the forms will run from April 25 to May 2.

If he eventually resigns and declares his ambition, he would join the list of APC aspirants, including the senator representing Oyo South Senatorial District, Sarafadeen Alli and Oyedele Alao, popularly called Allow Alao, in the governorship race.
