A coalition of youth and student groups, alongside the Senate Arm of the National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS), has called on the Supreme Court of Nigeria to deliver a fair, impartial, and law-driven judgment in the ongoing legal dispute involving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), describing the moment as a critical test of Nigeria’s democratic strength.
In separate but aligned press statements, the groups emphasized that the outcome of the case goes beyond party politics, noting that it represents a defining moment for judicial integrity, public trust, and the stability of the nation’s democracy.
The Coalition of Youth and Students for Good Governance, through its National Coordinator, Olalere Benedict Adetunji, stressed that Nigeria’s democracy stands or falls on the strength of its institutions, particularly the Supreme Court at crucial national moments.
According to the coalition, “justice must not only be done, but must be seen to be done,” adding that the apex court’s decisions carry far-reaching implications that shape political realities and influence public confidence in governance.
“The Supreme Court’s role is not to take sides but to interpret the law with clarity, courage, and neutrality. A well-reasoned and impartial judgment will reassure Nigerians that democratic processes, no matter how turbulent, can still be resolved through lawful and peaceful means,” the statement read.
The coalition further warned that any perception of bias or external influence could erode public trust and undermine years of democratic progress, urging the judiciary to remain steadfast in upholding its independence.
Similarly, the NAPS Senate, led by its President, Oyewumi Festus Ayomide, reaffirmed its commitment to justice, constitutional order, and democratic preservation. The student body underscored that democracy thrives only where institutions are strong, justice is impartial, and the rule of law is respected.
Citing the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, NAPS noted that sovereignty belongs to the people, urging all arms of government to act in ways that protect public trust and ensure national stability.
The association also cautioned against any form of political imbalance that could weaken democratic structures, stressing the importance of checks and balances, institutional independence, and healthy political competition.
“The judiciary remains the last hope of the common man. Nigerians look to the Supreme Court for fairness, courage, and decisions rooted solely in law and equity,” the statement added.
Both groups described the PDP crisis as reflective of broader challenges within Nigeria’s political landscape, where internal party disputes often test constitutional order and democratic resilience.
They maintained that a transparent and impartial judgment would not only resolve the immediate dispute but also strengthen national unity, restore public confidence, and reinforce the credibility of Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
Also lending his support to the NAPS position was the Clerk of the Senate, Jimoh Ibrahim, who joined in urging all stakeholders to uphold democratic values and avoid actions capable of destabilizing the polity.
As Nigerians await the Supreme Court’s verdict, the coalition and student leaders collectively expressed hope that the justices would rise above all forms of pressure and deliver a judgment that reflects the true spirit of justice, equity, and the rule of law.
They concluded that the issue at stake transcends the PDP, stressing that it is ultimately about safeguarding Nigeria’s democratic future and ensuring that every voice, institution, and process remains protected.
