Senators of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Joint Campus Council (JCC) Oyo State Chapter have threatened to boycott the forthcoming convention if the date is not changed to accommodate their academic schedules.

In a petition to the Convention Planning Committee (CPC) on Monday, the NANS Senators expressed dissatisfaction with 25th March, 2026 as scheduled date, citing ongoing examinations in their institutions.

The association demanded a new date as to allow its full participation, warning that proceeding without the entire body will undermine the convention’s legitimacy.

“It is both alarming and unacceptable that a date of such importance was fixed, that is 25th March, 2026 without due consideration for the academic engagements of the majority of Senators. As it stands, over two-thirds (2/3) of Senators are currently involved in ongoing examinations within their respective institutions, making attendance practically impossible.”, it said.

The NANS Senate ultimatum comes amid concerns over marginalization and lack of access to convention grounds, as highlighted by NANS JCC chairmen in a recent protest.

The chairmen of National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, have called for inclusive policies and recognition of their roles in representing grassroots student interests.

Meanwhile, the Student Union has urged the Oyo State government to intervene, as Governor Seyi Makinde has previously been demonstrating support for student welfare initiatives.

However, the outcome of this standoff remains uncertain, with Union Senate prepared to take further action if their demands are not met.

” We therefore strongly demand the immediate postponement and rescheduling of the convention to a date that accommodates the academic realities of Senators.

“Failure to heed this demand will leave us with no option but to formally dissociate ourselves from the outcomes of such a convention and take further necessary actions in defence of democratic principles.”, the statement stated.

Recall, the petition has been copied to relevant authorities, including the Executive Governor of Oyo State, NANS National President, DSS, among others.
